The Story of a St. Pat's boy and a KC gal...
according to Richard Koh

Getting to know Dawn…

It all started as a St Pat's and KC thing. Some of my friends then were raving about this girl called "Dawn" from Katong Convent and I got kinda curious about how she looked like. Back then, I was serving as an altar boy at the Saturday 6.45pm Mass at Holy Family Church and I heard she was in the Sunday 6.15pm choir. The choir girls at my Mass time weren't very appealing, so I decided to check out the Sunday evening mass scene. (You know how Catholic guys dig good choir girls!).

I started serving at the 6.15pm Mass and instead of focusing on the Mass, I was trying to get a good look at who this "Dawn" was.

I did, and ME liked what I saw.

In fact, I tried to create opportunities to get a closer look at her, like volunteering to serve on the right side of the altar. You see, the altar servers on the right side had to do much more work (like offertory, ringing the bell, etc) than those serving on the left side. So suddenly, I became a damn hardworking altar boy.

I continued serving at that Mass but never got to speak to her till a year later.

I never had the courage to talk to her. Took me about a year before I finally mustered the courage to call her. That was after our O Levels. When I called, she was very surprised and didn’t believe that it was me. So we continued the charade for a couple of days till I finally asked her out to prove that it was really me.

Our first date took place after school ended. (She was in Temasek JC then). It was a typical movie, dinner date.

And the rest, is history...

Then came the Proposal…

I was searching a good solitaire for me to propose to her. I finally found the perfect one for her but only proposed a month later.

That was the 12th of October, our 10th anniversary together!

I wanted to catch her off-guard, so we went out on a Saturday as usual, for movies and shopping. When it was time to go back, I asked her to follow me to the “Our Lady of Perpetual Succour” Church (OLPS). It was about 11pm then, and I told her I wanted to visit the Mother Mary’s grotto to say a prayer.

When we got there, I got down on my knees and prayed to Mother Mary for her prayers and blessing. Dawn was just standing beside me then.

Still on my knees, I turned to her and proposed with the ring I carried in my pocket the entire day (Was so afraid I’ll drop it!).

Nothing too fanciful, but just wanted to propose on hallowed ground.
